Shakespeare Schools Festival
MALAWI

Worldwide - South Africa

Our inspiration in Malawi is the work of the Shakespeare Schools Festival - South Africa, which is now in its thirteenth year (2023).

Zikomo kwambili, Baie dankie and Spasibo bolshoe to Ms. Kseniya Filinova-Bruton, the Director, and EduCape Trust for their encouragement and support!

They have contributed not only advice but also (without charge) texts of adapted Shakespeare plays and certificates for presentation to participating schools.

In March 2020 a longstanding ambition was fulfilled, when the Kamuzu Academy Drama Club - by kind invitation of the South African Festival - took its production of The Comedy of Errors to perform at the Fugard Theatre in Cape Town. Click here to read an account of the visit.

In May 2019 the Baxter Theatre (Cape Town) hosted the second half of the Shakespeare Schools Festival for Western Cape.

Eighteen schools gathered over six days to perform plays in every genre to a high order of excellence. They included schools for the deaf, the blind and those with learning difficulties. Each evening opened with this short video.

Ms. Kseniya Filinova-Bruton's report on the Festival is available here (.pdf).

In this photograph pupils of Wynberg Boys' High School perform King Lear (May 2019).

Mr. Mike LeResche's archive of photographs of the South African Festival is available here.
